Identity Access
Management -
Making strides in managing IAM with
cost-effective solutions
Over
the past decade, the Identity & Access Management (IAM) industry
has grown considerably. Here, Singh shares his perspective on this
developing sector.
What are IAM’s primary growth areas?
As the IAM industry continues to evolve, three significant growth areas
exist. The first is Access Governance. This sector includes solutions
for Role Engineering, Segregation of Duty and Entitlement. Access
Governance is critical for compliance and relevant to organizations
that have or have not implemented IAM solutions.
The second area is Identity Federation. Although collaboration allows
companies to offer more comprehensive services, it also opens areas of
concern—for example, the risk of inadvertently sharing confidential
information. As a result, organizations are turning to federated
solutions as a trusted identity infrastructure between parties.
The third area is Managed Identity Services.
Due to long implementation lead times and high capital investment involved,
Hosted Identity Services is gaining acceptance. The Software-as-a-Service model
has become an attractive alternative. By embracing this platform, companies do
not need to make a capital investment in buying licenses, yet they benefit by renting
the service.
How does ILANTUS support customers in each of these areas?
Our goal is to demystify Identity Management through sensible, packaged offerings
that address Role Engineering, Segregation of Duty and Entitlement Management.
We have taken great strides in reducing the total cost of ownership—by as much as
75 percent—so companies of all sizes can easily embrace solutions. We have also cut
down on the implementation time frame by more than 40 percent. We continue to
bundle the industry’s top tools together with fixed-fee implementations and longterm
support. We are focused on reducing implementation lead times from the
industry average of six to 18 months to just three to six months.
ILANTUS was one of the first organizations to work in the Federated Identity
space. As a result, we have a large number of commercial and governmental clients,
as well as an intimate working knowledge of the available technologies. Our recent
work with a U.S. state government puts us in a prime position to help governmental
units reduce health care costs through public-private partnerships. While others
have held true to traditional delivery models, ILANTUS has been a trailblazer
in providing Managed Identity Services designed to fit individualized needs. We
are working with many Fortune 500 customers that have outsourced all of their
Identity Management work, including day-to-day administration and 24/7 support
operations.
Why is ILANTUS unique in this space?
ILANTUS provides comprehensive end to-end Identity Access Management
and Governance solutions. Because we have developed and nurtured
relationships with the key technology vendors identified in Gartner’s
Magic Quadrant, ILANTUS is in a prime position to offer the widest
range of technologies, backed up with full implementation and long-term
support experience Likewise, ILANTUS provides the widest possible
choice in terms of consulting— before the purchase, during
implementation and going forward. Lastly, while others work strictly on
a time and material basis, ILANTUS offers fixed-fee Identity Management
solutions to provide clients with an attractive risk-free alternative.
What are ILANTU S’ future plans?
We are investing heavily in expanding our 24/7 support offering and continuing to
add depth and breadth to each implementation area. We are making major investments
into Managed Identity Services. We continue to invest in building long-term
relationships with our customers rather than worrying about profit from each
transaction.
ILANTUS supports Telus in launching Identity Management and Access Governance Managed Services.

ILANTUS implementing BMC Identity Version first time
ILANTUS all set to implement IBM's latest TIM 5.1
On
Tuesday, June 23, 2009, IBM announced Tivoli Identity Manager 5.1.
ILANTUS is one of the five companies worldwide which was a beta site
for this product and has 6 of its engineers working on it from last 4
Months. ILANTUS is therefore in a unique position to
deliver services around TIM 5.1 which may require significant training
and ramp up time for any other Service Provider.
ILANTUS
is one of the very few IBM Partners that has been working in the domain
of Access Governance over the last two years and has implemented
several successful projects. Some of the key projects in the space of
Role Hierarchy Implementation, Separation of Duties evaluation has been
with one of the large utility provider in Canada and a Leading
Insurance Company in the US. This area is a part of future road map for
your organization.
ILANTUS today has the requisite domain knowledge and experience in the Role and SoD Space along with extensive skills on TIM 5.1 to enable organizations
like yours to realize the benefits of the Tivoli Identity Manager.
ILANTUS because of its expertise with 5.1 is releasing an upgrade service pack
for all TIM customers who would like to upgrade from earlier versions
to 5.1.
Some
of the important enhancements in TIM 5.1 are: TIM 5.1 focuses on
Operational Role Management which will help companies reduce
administration costs and improve compliance management. By
embedding operational role management into this TIM release, IBM
distinguishes itself from the competition who require their customers
to purchase two separate solutions to deliver the equivalent
functionality. Operational role management will deliver critical
IAM governance functionality that will help enrich and expand their
user provisioning and role management deployments. Additionally,
enhancements to TIM's access certification capabilities allow customers
to meet compliance needs - with or without user provisioning and role
management.
TIM 5.1 Enhancements
Role hierarchy helps
to simplify and reduce the cost of user administration by enabling the
use of an enterprise role structure. Role hierarchy provides the
ability to establish parent/member role relationships that deliver the
notion of inheritance between roles to be directly applied to policies
governing user access within IBM Tivoli Identity Manager V5.1. A
hierarchical role structure used to manage user access not only helps
reduce the number of objects required for administration, but it also
can provide improved visibility of user access.
Separation of duties can strengthen
security and compliance by creating, modifying, or deleting policies
that exclude users from membership to multiple roles, that may present
a business conflict (for example, a user in an accounts receivable role
cannot have the accounts-payable role). This preventative approach can
deter against violations from occurring in the first place.
User Recertification enhancements
simplify the attestation process while expanding the means to manage
compliance. Recertification of a user's roles (new), accounts, and
groups in bulk fashion enables managers to make yes/no decisions on a
user's access rights in a single submission.
Group Management helps simplify
and reduce the cost of user administration by offering the ability to
add, remove, or change the attributes of a group entity within the
Tivoli Identity Manager console.

ILANTUS looks to expand global footprint
29 September 2005, CIOL
BANGALORE: Enterprises in India and abroad are increasingly depending on Identity Management solutions to fulfill compliance requirements as mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the BASEL II banking regulation.
This market demand has boosted the bottom lines of Bangalore-based ILANTUS Technologies, which provides Identity Management solutions and services.
The five-year old company which, until now looked at the US and Indian market, is eyeing potential markets in Europe, Middle East, Australia and other regions in Asia.
Binod Singh, President and CEO, ILANTUS, spoke about this growing space and the company's plans. "Around two-thirds of security threats happen from the inside. The mechanisms to prevent such inside attacks are less. So controlling access becomes very important for an enterprise."
While Singh did not divulge figures on the company's revenues, he said that the company recorded 350% growth in revenues this year and around 400% surge in profits. He is hopeful of sustaining this bull run in the niche identity management solutions space, which is slated to reach $5 billion this year.
Besides providing Identity Management consulting and customization services, ILANTUS offers a service called lifecycle management system. "No-one else offers this service which involves running and implementing the solution and also changing it as and when required." The company signed on its first Indian customer- IT services major, Cognizant Technology Services.
To solidify its presence as a niche specialist in gaining customers while vying against big service providers like Infosys, Wipro and IBM Global Services, the company is developing its own IP around solutions. ILANTUS developed a patented compliance management solution around BMC's product, which is currently used by 15 customers in the US.
"While other software service vendors have breadth of services, we can boast of a depth of expertise in this area. It is a volume versus value service choice for the customer,"Singh said.
ILANTUS has implemented Identity Management projects for global clients like HSBC, CapitalOne, ANZ Bank, Citibank, World Bank and Coco Cola. Singh is hopeful of making in-roads into the Indian market especially in the BPO segment.
The company has 70 employees spread across its offices in India, US and Singapore
Suite Sounds Of Identity Management From BMC
27 June 2005, CRN
Determined to play first chair in the Identity Management ensemble, BMC Software this week debuted its BMC Identity Management Suite.
Somesh Singh, Vice President and General Manager of BMC's Identity Management business unit, Houston, also outlined a yearlong development road map for the product.
Identity Management Suite has the keys to unlock and communicate with a greater number of customized, Web-based applications and esoteric third-party networks, said Singh. And by concentrating and improving on five management areas-directories, access, passwords, compliance auditing and provisioning-BMC plans to deliver an even more comprehensive suite by the end of 2006, he said.
"Customers should be able to deploy our suite and integrate it with home-grown and third-party applications easily, and by doing so extend our product," said Singh.
A component of BMC's overarching Business Service Management solution stack, Identity Management Suite can be used to securely link an enterprise customer's employees, business partners and customers while protecting sensitive data and ensuring a compliance-friendly audit trail, he said.
This fall, a new Web-based interface will appear along with the introduction of the BMC Compliance Manager auditing solution, BMC Federated Identity Manager for federated ID groups and BMC Atrium Identity Discovery-all of which will feed BMC's Configuration Management Database, a clearinghouse for best-practice configurations that enables the modeling of changes against known configurations.
Then later in 2006, BMC expects to complete the integration of a directory manager and a standardized, open API, which customers can use to share identity information across the five management areas.
Binod Singh, President and CEO of ILANTUS Technologies, a global ID management integrator with offices in Houston, swears allegiance to BMC's Identity Management Suite. ILANTUS' sales of BMC's Identity Management products have risen 100 percent year over year, and the BMC road map "is very timely" for the industry's needs, he said.
BMC's January purchase of French Identity Management vendor Calendra and its March acquisition of OpenNetwork Technologies, a Web-based application and extranet technology vendor in Clearwater, Fla., gave BMC the load-bearing elements of the new suite. The acquisitions also doubled the number of BMC's worldwide channel partners after grafting Calendra and OpenNetwork partner programs to its own, said BMC's Singh
Outsourcing exposes firms to fraud
16 June 2005, BBC News
The arrest last week of a man in western India in an alleged call-centre fraud case went unreported. This was despite the high-profile reporting on the case in April when 16 others were arrested.
This suited India's business process outsourcing (BPO) companies, especially Mphasis, whose four employees have been implicated in the case. They are yet to recover from the shock of the alleged fraud of nearly $400,000.
Amid calls for tightening BPO regulations and more effective cyber laws the country's call centres are busy taking adequate security measures. Another one or two such cases and the industry is doomed, they admit.
Police, who are still investigating the case, believe it was well thought through and very organized.
Investigating officer Sanjay Yadav says the latest arrest just highlights how well-planned and widespread the fraud was.
Backlash fears
Police say some of the 17 people currently languishing in jail opened fake accounts, and allegedly transferred large sums from the bank accounts of four American customers of Citibank whose back office work was being done by Mphasis in Pune near Mumbai.
Mr. Yadav says they went on a luxurious holiday to Bangkok and kept transferring more money into their fake accounts from the Thai capital.
The industry, fearing a backlash from clients in the West, has started to get its act together.
One of the security steps the BPO centres are taking is the stringent background screening of new employees.
Yogesh Bhura, whose company, Quest Research, undertakes this task, has more than 250 BPO customers.
He has clients all over Asia, but many of his new customers are Indian.
But Mr Bhura's main challenge remains "educating people of the need to make this critical activity an integral part of their recruitment policy."
He reveals that 10-25% of applicants to call centres provide false and incorrect information.
"Fake degrees and documents are a major concern of our clients," he says.
Screening
But verifying an applicant's criminal background remains the most challenging task for companies such as Mr Bhura's and he admits it: "It's a grey area: there's no central data of criminals, there's no standardised process of data storage in police stations. It's a continuous challenge."
Many believe background screening is not enough. Mr Bhura is quick to add a rider: "It's a risk mitigation and not a risk elimination activity."
But one of his clients, Intellinet Global Services, a joint venture between HDFC and Barclays, says background verification is not the only security tool it's applying.
"We take a lot of precautions," says Manuel D'Souza, the company's HR head.
"We don't allow mobile phones in the office, no e-mail access is provided; pen and papers are not allowed in and all employees are screened when they leave the office."
But experts say call centres are a young industry in India. It still doesn't have a comprehensive security management system in place.
Binod Singh, boss of Bangalore-based security management company ILANTUS, is alarmed by the state of affairs the BPO companies are in.
"Our understanding of most of the BPOs that we have been surveying is that they have put the basic IT systems in place, they have put in a lot of money, but the management of IT infrastructure is not up to the mark," he says.
This is one of the major problems with the $4bn BPO industry, which began to flourish in India just five years ago.
Security hole
According to industry estimates, 80% of BPO companies don't use integrated security management tools. That probably explains why some current and former employees of Mphasis, which has a security certification from an international trade body, allegedly stole huge sums belonging to its clients in the U.S.
ILANTUS surveyed seven call centres in Bangalore and to its horror found that the digital IDs of the former employees still existed, which potentially can be misused.
But Mr. D'Souza says most companies would immediately delete the IDs of the employees who are leaving them.
Growth brings in its own pressures. Back office business is one of India's sunshine industries, growing at 30% annually. The workforce is young, loyalty is low as the young boys and girls move to greener pastures at the first opportunity.
For most of them it's not a career option, but a good first job out of college. The workforce turnover is as high as 40%. Work from the US and Europe is pouring in thick and fast.
Cyber squad
Industry players admit they know security is the top priority, but they say there is no time to implement all the security measures.
Mr. Bhura says background screening is just one of the security measures: "Internal security control has to be the most important component of the overall security system".
Mr. Singh of ILANTUS too cannot guarantee a foolproof internal security system.
"Our system is not 100%, but it dramatically reduces the risks."
But one can take a lot of satisfaction from the fact that a relatively small city like Pune has a Cyber Crime Cell.
The alleged fraud was committed in Pune-based Mphasis and it was busted by the city's Cyber Crime Cell.
As Mr. Yadav of the Cell says: "We have acted swiftly to bust the fraud and recovered most of the money siphoned off. Pune police are providing a safe environment for BPO customers from the West."
Till the time the authorities come up with tighter legislations, the Cyber Crime Cells in Indian cities are the best bet.
